Abstract A process to remove iron from bauxite ore is described in which the ore is first finely crushed, calcined, and contacted with a reducing gas to convert iron present as very weakly magnetic goethite or hematite to magnetite or elemental iron. The ore is then passed through a magnetic separator to remove the iron. A 1.5% Fe2O3 product was produced from an Alabama bauxite ore analyzing 2 ...

Red Mud (RM) is a solid waste product obtained from aluminum industries which is reddish brown in color. RM is mainly made up of oxides of iron, aluminum, silicon and titanium. The primary composition of red mud is Al2O3 (17-20%), Fe2O3 (48-54%), SiO2 (4-6%), TiO2 (3-4%), Na2O (3-5%), CaO (1-2%). RM is usually considered as an inert solid waste ...

Red mud is a by-product of alumina production from bauxite ore by the Bayer method, which contains considerable amounts of valuable components such as iron, aluminum, titanium, and scandium. In this study, an approach was applied to extract iron, i.e., carbothermic reduction roasting of red mud with sodium and potassium carbonates followed by magnetic separation.
The scope of this work is to develop and optimize a reductive roasting process followed by wet magnetic separation for iron recovery from bauxite residue (BR).
