I verified that my mill gap was as large as possible and consistent across all ends of the roller. Mine measures out to 0.055″ and is the widest setting on the MM-3. I then measured out two one-pound batches of base malt. In this case, I used Avangard Pilsener Malt as it was handy and fairly standard to the kinds of malts I use.
I selected four different base malts – Viking Xtra Pale, Rahr 2-Row, Briess 2-Row, and Admiral Gallagher's Best. I then used a 2-roller homebrew mill and crushed the malts using four different gap settings. The gap settings were 1.25 mm, 1.0 mm, 0.75 mm and 0.50 mm. I used a feeler gauge to verify these settings in between each milling.

So I then did a product review on the 3-roller Monster Mill MM-3, seeing if I could get good efficiencies without going as fine on the crush. Since the MM-3 review was done at a different time, with different batch of grains, the Mash Efficiency numbers can't be directly combined/compared between the two experiments.

Posted July 24, 2013. I set and run the monster mill at our LHBS to .033 for recirculating E-BIAB. I get about 75%. A sectional view of the single-toggle type of jaw crusher is shown below. The gap on the 2-roller mills should be set somewhere around .037 - .055". You will need to assess the crush, and determine if the gap should be smaller or wider. For my Braumeister setup I think the optimum crush gap is 1.1 mm to 1.5 mm (0.043" to 0.059") so I'll shoot for a variable gap width of the second roller in that range. The Monster Mill setup video indicated that the factory setting of the second roller gap is supposed to ship at 0.045", so hopefully it'll be dialed in right out of the box.
was set at 3.5 mm and the gap for the second pass was set at 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, or 3.0 mm. Corn passing through the roller mill once with a gap setting of 2 mm was used as a control. Monster Mill MM3 - Fantastic mill with a bit of a learning curve Finally made the jump into milling my own grain, and after doing a lot of research, decided on the MM3. I have a Crankenstein 2D two roller mill. I have the gap set to .035" and get a lot of flour and I'm having a lot of stuck sparges even when using barley malt. Next time I'm going to run my grist through twice at .050" and see how it looks and works. I have done wet conditioning as well and it does help.
