Selenite is a common name for the mineral gypsum. Historically it was only used for transparent crystals and the white fibrous variety was called satin spar instead. (Since the latter was also used for fibrous calcite and aragonite, scientific sources use the name as a prefix instead. This material is labeled satin spar gypsum.)
The larger crystalline form of Selenite, being a clear colourless crystal, is more rare than the other forms of the mineral. Satin Spar is usually fibrous, translucent white and satiny. The other forms of Gypsum are readily available in tabular, rosette or needle-like crystals, with Alabaster being the granular massive form of the mineral.
Gypsum is formed as evaporites from marine waters. It occurs in various forms in nature—gypsite (an impure form in the earth), selenite (flattened and twinned crystals and transparent cleavable masses), alabaster (a translucent and fine grain), and satin spar (a silky and fibrous transparent crystal form)—and in various purities.
